Nurturing Your Well-Being in the New Year

Katherine B. Wiens

The new year has arrived, bringing with it the tradition of making resolutions, setting goals, or choosing a word to guide our journey. While these practices are valuable and I personally incorporate many of them, consider the power of focusing on a singular act of self-care for the upcoming year. Embrace a guiding question that can resonate with you throughout the day, steering you towards a fulfilling life and the accomplishment of your aspirations. That transformative question is, "What do I need right now?"

This question is rooted in the principles of self-love and self-care, this inquiry beckons us to pause and reflect on our individual well-being. Yet, for countless women, the clamor of a different question persists: "What do my children need?" or "What does my partner require?" The external world, it seems, frequently dictates our sense of self-worth, overshadowing the importance of addressing our personal needs.

Society often perpetuates the notion that a woman's value lies primarily in what she can contribute to others. Rarely do we afford ourselves the luxury of contemplating our own needs. Even when we do, the question may subtly morph into, "What do I need to enhance my role as a mother, partner, daughter, or employee?" The struggle lies in acknowledging that our inherent value is not contingent on perpetual self-sacrifice to meet external expectations.

In my journey towards self-discovery and empowerment, I've come to recognize the necessity of affording my own needs the same degree of attention as the demands of others. It's a reasonable expectation that our needs be met on par with those of the external world. Returning to the pivotal question, "What do I need?"

Perhaps it's a moment to nurture your physical well-being—indulging in a brisk walk, luxuriating in a soothing bath, or engaging in an invigorating workout to promote a healthy sweat. Alternatively, it might be time to tend to your emotional landscape through mindfulness practices, journaling, recreational activities, or even allowing yourself a cathartic cry in the face of sadness. Social connections play an equally crucial role—reaching out to a friend, penning an email or letter, enjoying a coffee date, or connecting with a trusted family member.

To delve deeper into this exploration of personal needs, let's turn to expert advice on cultivating a resilient and fulfilling self-care routine:

1. Mindful Self-Inquiry:

Renowned psychologists emphasize the significance of mindful self-inquiry in understanding and addressing personal needs. Dr. Susan David, a leading expert in emotional agility, suggests integrating reflective moments into our daily routines. Set periodic alarms on your phone as a cue to pause, place your hand on your heart, take a conscious breath, and inquire, "What do I need right now?" Dr. David suggests categorizing these needs into physical, emotional, and social dimensions, fostering a comprehensive understanding of your well-being.

2. Creativity and Curiosity:

Dr. Brene Brown, a renowned researcher on vulnerability and courage, advocates for approaching self-care with creativity and curiosity. Allow yourself to explore diverse ideas about what you genuinely need. Dr. Brown encourages individuals to embrace a playful mindset, experimenting with various self-care practices to discern what resonates most deeply. This creative exploration can lead to a more personalized and effective self-care routine tailored to your unique needs.

3. Consistent Practice:

Dr. Judson Brewer, a neuroscientist and expert in habit change, underscores the importance of consistency in self-inquiry. Repetition, he suggests, is key to strengthening the neural pathways associated with recognizing and addressing personal needs. By incorporating this practice several times a day, you enhance your ability to attune to your needs more effortlessly over time.

4. Affirmation of Inherent Value:

Drawing from the wisdom of positive psychology, Dr. Martin Seligman emphasizes the role of self-affirmation in recognizing inherent value. Caring for your needs is not an act of selfishness; rather, it is a vital affirmation of your intrinsic worth. Dr. Seligman suggests incorporating positive affirmations into your daily routine, reinforcing the belief that prioritizing your well-being is an essential aspect of a fulfilling and meaningful life.

Remember, you are a unique and invaluable individual. Incorporating expert advice into your self-care journey is a powerful step toward recognizing and fulfilling your needs. Prioritizing self-care is not a luxury but a cornerstone of a resilient and flourishing life. As you embark on this journey, allow the wisdom of experts to guide you, affirming the belief that caring for your needs is a fundamental act of self-love and empowerment.
